Wessex Water YTL Group

Wessex Water are a company committed to reducing environmental impact; their building in Bath was designed in 1999 and spear-headed the construction of low-energy, naturally ventilated buildings.

When HHD were appointed to design and manage the internal refurbishment of their ground floor ‘street’ area and staff restaurant there was a strong emphasis on re-use and up-cycling of  their existing furniture and equipment. We conducted a survey and determined what elements could be adapted into the new scheme. Some furniture was re-purposed; other items were re-upholstered or, for example, table bases retained and table tops replaced. The challenge was to achieve a consistent look and feel whilst combining new and old elements, whilst ensuring the finishes and colour palette aligned with the Brand Directive.

The existing staff breakout and dining facility at Wessex was underutilised and in need of modernisation. By increasing the size of the central café in the ‘street’, space was freed up for additional seating and the canteen servery to undergo a refurbishment. Once again a mix of existing and new equipment was adopted.

The former traditional restaurant seating was upgraded to incorporate a variety of settings allowing staff to use the space as an extended work area. Dining furniture was mixed with soft seating, meeting booths, private 1:1 booths, sofa areas and poser height seating.

The result was a space that was occupied and lively throughout the day as to opposed only the lunch-time rush.
